What Age should my Child see the Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that children receive their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7, a guideline that Terenure Orthodontics follows closely. At our clinic, we provide complimentary early orthodontic examinations for children to establish a baseline for their oral health and to lay the groundwork for a healthy, beautiful smile as they grow. This early assessment is crucial for identifying potential orthodontic issues that, if caught early, can be monitored or addressed to prevent more serious problems later on.
When should my Child have Braces?
We prioritise a conservative approach when it comes to treating young patients. We believe in recommending treatment only when it is clearly advantageous and can offer significant benefits. This approach ensures that any intervention is truly in the best interest of the child's dental health and development. By opting for treatment only when necessary, we aim to minimise the physical and emotional strain on the child and provide care that is both effective and considerate of their overall well-being.
Our commitment to early and careful evaluation helps set children on the path to a lifetime of good oral health, ensuring that any orthodontic treatment undertaken is timely, appropriate, and tailored to their individual needs.
How much is a 7&Up Check-Up?
We are delighted to offer complimentary initial check-ups for kids aged 7-10 years. During these initial evaluations, our aim is not to rush into treatment. We understand that while early identification of orthodontic issues is important, it does not necessarily mean that immediate intervention is required, in the vast majority of cases we can just monitor. Dr O'Connor will take the time to thoroughly assess each child's unique situation. This careful evaluation allows us to determine whether early treatment would be beneficial. In many cases, early intervention can address issues that might become more complicated if left untreated until the child is older.
The Process
This appointment is to discuss your goals with one of our specialist orthodontists. It may also involve your dental and medical history, a physical examination of your teeth and jaw, X-rays, and possibly impressions of your teeth to create models.
The orthodontist will review the X-rays, photos, and examination results to devise a specific plan for moving your teeth into the correct position. This plan will include the estimated length of treatment, cost of treatment and any preparatory work needed.
If you're child has issues that require addressing at this point, we may decide to fit an appliance to help or we may need to send them for a panoramic or 3D scan.
In the likely event that your child's dentition is in good condition and requires no intervention, we may decide to review them in a few years when their dentition is more mature. If they have had an appliance fitted, we are likely to monitor more frequently (every 6 months or if issues witht eh appliance arise).
